mph Top Ten Spins of the Year: Number 5
The top ten list currently in the Dec/Jan issue of the magazine continues.
#5 Porsche Cayman S
At $60,000 to start, the Cayman is too Expensive. Oh,and its name is stupid, of course.Otherwise,the Cayman is now our
Porsche of choice—assuming of course that we can't have a 550 Spyder,
which we can't. Anyway, the Cayman S, with its bubble roof and pumpedup
rear fenders, is both more odd looking and prettier than the long-tailed
911. It's also quicker-witted, with an eager, slice-and-dice demeanor and
stellar steering. It has the same weight-to-power ratio as the 911 Carrera,
and its engine sings more sweetly than the 911. With a mid-mounted 295-
hp 3.4-liter flat six, the Cayman S is every bit as quick down a given piece
of road as its bigger brother. Frankly, it's just the younger man's Porsche
hardtop. Porsche likes to pretend that this car has a lot of cargo space and
it does, if you add up all the little cubbies and front and rear trunks, all of
which are very useful if you happen to carry many small things. Porsche
will make a non-S Cayman available in about a year's time, which should
bring the price down, and this is good because with a few options, the
Cayman S is as expensive as the slightly cheesier looking but far, far faster
Corvette Z06. Still, it's a mind-blower.
