Check out the latest spy photos here of the next Land Rover Freelander. See anything interesting? That back end looks remarkably similar to the new line of Range Rovers. That's only a good thing as the next Freelander will be hitting a market where owning a Land Rover is actually cool. Add an "entry level" vehicle priced close to the BMW X3, and the still profitable luxury SUV segment should prepare for its next hit.

The basis of the Freelander is the same C1 global platform Ford has used successfully in the Volvo S40, Mazda 3 and European Ford Focus. Our sources say the Freelander will switch to a transversely mounted in-line six-cylinder engines, expected to be 2.8 or 3.0 liter units from Volvo, with a six-speed manual transmission. A 2.3 liter, five-cylinder diesel engine from Ford is also rumored.
